What is the Head Lice Policy at Your Child’s School?

No Live Lice Policy vs. No Live Lice/ No Nit Policy

When faced with head lice, it is very important to understand the policy of the school district your child attends because not all school districts are the same. Not sure what the policy is? Nearly all public school districts have their policy stated on a document that can be found on the school district web-site.

The majority of public school districts have a “no live head lice” policy-they send children home with live bugs but children with nits (lice eggs) may be readmitted as long as the live lice have been killed or removed. Still several public school districts retain a “no nit” policy as well.   If your child has live lice and/or nits they cannot attend school.

The majority of private schools have a “no nit head lice” policy.  If you child has even one egg in their hair, they cannot attend school.

Even if your school has a no live lice policy and allows your child to attend with eggs in the hair, it is important to understand the life cycle of lice eggs. One adult lice hatches about 4-8 lice eggs a day for about 17 days.  Lice eggs must hatch within 5 days or less. Once the baby lice hatches, it then takes about 10 days for the lice to become an adult and begin reproducing and hatching their own eggs.

It is also important to keep in mind that outside product rarely, if ever, kills lice eggs due to their protective shell. Another important thing to know is over-the-counter shampoos such as Rid or Nix only kill live lice some of the time because the lice have developed a resistance to the chemicals in these product.  Even if these product do kill the live lice, they do not do anything to the eggs. Combing out works but it requires patience, time, accuracy, and a high quality lice combs.
